Jacob L. Esser, MAC, L.Ac

Acupuncturist ❘ Owner & Co-Founder of Birchwood Integrative

Jacob graduated his class valedictorian with honors to earn a Master of Acupuncture degree. He specializes in orthopedics and sports injuries, acute and chronic pain conditions, and mental health. He can also treat a wide range of other conditions such as headaches and migraines, stroke rehabilitation, insomnia, and more.

Jacob Esser grew up outside of a small town of 2,000 people in southern Wisconsin. While growing up, he had horses, dogs, cats, among other animals. He was active in 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA). He played softball, baseball, and football. His appreciation of nature and fondness for animals led him to work on a farm in Colorado shortly after graduating high school. But his passion for helping people led him back to Wisconsin to pursue further education.

Upon returning to Wisconsin, he completed a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program and a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program before continuing classes to become a Registered Nurse. During this time, Jacob shifted his path to pursue a career in complementary medicine by becoming a licensed acupuncturist.

Before, during, and after Grad school, Jacob served veterans in an emergency department at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital for ten years and loved every minute of working with such a unique demographic. He was also a part of an Emergency Response Unit within the facility that volunteered to go to disaster zones. He completed month-long deployments in 2020 and 2021 to areas hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.

After graduating at the top of this class from Northwestern Health Sciences University with a Master of Acupuncture degree, Jacob continued training to focus on sports injuries and chronic pain conditions. Many of his treatments blend traditional acupuncture with Master Tung’s style of acupuncture and other Western approaches to fast-track recovery. He has worked in various clinical settings and gained experience with conditions such as sports injuries and rehab, acute and chronic pain, orthopedics, headaches & migraines, mental health, insomnia, stroke rehabilitation, and more.

In addition to his work and dedication to Birchwood, Jacob is also an acupuncturist for Allina Health, working with the Penny George Institute for Health and Healing. Being at Birchwood and Allina allows him to reach more people in need as he follows his passion and collaborates with other like-minded colleagues who also want to help by delivering the best care possible.

When not in the clinic, Jacob values spending time with his family and friends, skiing, playing softball, traveling, and camping. He loves visiting National Parks and eventually hopes to build a camper van for his journeys.
